This is the Prision tree, and yes it was used as a prison to lock up the locals when they got a little out of control back when you could do that sort of thing.
almost forgot to tell you, next time you go in one of those "prison trees" make sure they are no snakes hiding in there. Its a favourite hiding place for theme and you can find up to 10 snakes in one tree, and they are very hard to spot AND very deadly . And this is no joke.
